Happy Bday David Bowie, & First Fan Letter

Musician, actor, producer, arranger, art patron, and fashion maven David Bowie turns a stylish 63 years old today. Kiddies unfamiliar with his pre- 'Modern Love' work may not realize he is famous for his musical innovation, character reinvention, and striking visual presentations both on stage and on video. He set the tone for the likes of other mavericks like Madonna and even Lady Gaga. Personas Bowie had adopted during his career include the glam era Ziggy Stardust, the R&B period Thin White Duke, and what Bowie fan can forget his "Berlin" period when he and Iggy Pop traveled to Germany to reinvent their sound pre 1980's.

Perhaps in honor of Bowie's bday, an American fan released a letter she received from the star before he found international fame. The 63-year-old singer wrote the letter in 1967 when he was a mere 20 years old and was still experimenting with his sound.

In the letter, he said: "Dear Sandra, When I called in this, my manager's office, a few moments ago I was handed my very first American fan letter - and it was from you. I was so pleased that I had to sit down and type an immediate reply, even though Ken's shouting at me to get on with a script he badly needs. That can wiat (wi-at? That''s a new English word which means wait)." The letter continued on with the artists responding to questions about his real name, height, and weight. Happy Birthday David! Give Iman a kiss for us.
