Dear Dr. Jamé:
It seems like every year there is a new "it" procedure. This year it seems to be carboxy which is supposed to be some kind of natural beauty cure-all. What is carboxy and how does it work?
Carboxytherapy is an amazing treatment that has only recently been “discovered” in the US, though it has been practiced for decades in Italy, Brazil, and France. What makes the carboxy treatment so spectacular is how many things it can address. The carboxy treatment works by harnessing the body’s ability to heal itself. Because CO2 is a naturally occurring substance found in our own bodies, the side effects are almost non-existent, but can include slight bruising at the injection site. Carboxytherapy can treat fat accumulations, cellulite, stretch marks, under eye circles, and even sagging skin.
The procedure itself actually involves carbon dioxide (CO2) being infiltrated into the subcutaneous tissue through a tiny 30G needle (0.3mm in diameter). From the injection point, the carbon dioxide diffuses easily into adjacent tissues. Carboxytherapy works in two complimentary ways. Firstly, and quite simply, carbon dioxide mechanically kills fat cells. Secondly, it also has a strong vasodilatory effect (causes dilation of blood vessels) on the capillaries in the area. Wider vessels mean bigger and stronger blood flow to the area, which means more oxygen. The increase in oxygen is important because it eliminates the built up fluid from between the cells. The end result is fewer fat cells and firmer subcutaneous tissue. Carboxytherapy is NOT a weight-loss method. Carboxy treatments are for those in a healthy weight range who want to lose small accumulations of fat and tighten the surrounding skin area, or for those who want to improve the appearance of stretch marks and do not plan on gaining more weight. There is NO downtime with carboxytherapy, and you can return to your normal activities immediately following your treatment, (which is quick and easy to do on your lunch break!!) Dr. Heskett is a pioneer in this newly FDA approved therapy , and has even started the first training program for doctors and nurses to learn carboxytherapy in the USA.
