The Beauty Beat at MBFW: Part 1

ideeli's Beauty Beat series delivers the beauty 411 from in and around Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week: the latest on makeup trends, the visionaries who work backstage at the shows create them, and how to get the looks yourself. Brought to you in savvy style by expert beauty blogger and pro makeup artist Felicia Walker Benson of ThisThatBeauty.com, read on for the mid-week beauty report from Lincoln Center!

It’s midweek at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week S/S 11, and I’m like a schoolgirl giddy with excitement over three beauty trends that I predict will be major major for next year.

SKIN
Fresh clean skin with minimal coverage dominated the runway. Shows like Lela Rose (above), Derek Lam, and United Bamboo all displayed that great skin is always “in.” Stila Cosmetics for Lela Rose achieved a flawless matte velvet complexion with the use of One Step Makeup, a single-step complexion product that balances skin tone and texture. The end result is healthy, beautiful, soft matte skin. For Spring/Summer 2011, it's a definite departure from the dewy, bronzy, “J-Lo” glow that traditionally accompanies warmer weather.

HAIR
Texture is all the rage backstage. At shows like Christian Siriano (above) and The Vessel by lois samuels, models rocked competing textures in side buns, romantic twists, and loose waves. We saw straight and messy all in the same hairdo. Aveda created the “Urban Bun” for Christian Siriano. The look is a sleek ponytail pulled back and then teased into a messy bun. The trend encourages you to forgo taming your locks and embrace texture in a modern way! Pairing strategically messy hair with beautiful skin and a punchy lip color makes the look fresh and on-trend.

RED LIPS
Girls, put away the gloss and embrace the bullet. Simply put, lipstick is back! Diane von Furstenberg (whom I got to bond with, above!) and Lela Rose drenched models’ lips in richly pigmented variations of red. While MAC for DVF went with classic rouge and Stila for Lela Rose went with orangey red, both focused on matte texture to ensure that lips remained the primary focal point. Lacoste (shop ideeli's Sunglasses and Watch sales today!) was another matte-lipped crowd pleaser. Fluorescent red lips ruled the runway and stole the show. The red lip trend is by far my favorite this season (as you can see from the picture!). As this powerful lip movement continues to emerge, ease your way into strong lips by starting with a sheered down version of your favorite red, berry, coral, or plum lipstick. Apply a generous coating, blot on a paper towel, and off you go!

Catch the final installment of Felicia’s Beauty Beat coverage on September 17, where she’ll do a round-up of her fave trends throughout MBFW. And don’t miss her tweets @ideeli as she brings moment-to-moment updates on backstage beauty looks, tips, and the inside beauty. Last but not least, also on September 17, Felicia’s and the Beauty Beat will be on ideeli’s Facebook page for two hours of beauty chat, doling out advice, tips, and trends in real time.
