The ideeli Scoop on MBFW

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is in full swing, and as official sponsors, we’re stationed in the style trenches all week long. From our virtual headquarters in Lincoln Center, we’re dishing up-to-the-minute twitter exclusives about the new collections. And when we’re not taking in the MBFW shows or trend spotting, we’re capturing photos of our favorite celebs in the front row! Here now is a midweek recap of the scene so far:

Pink Tartan
Pink Tartan—the Canadian womenswear line known for modern classics with precision cuts—presented an intimate runway experience. The models sported mod hair, dark frames, and pranced around the square-shaped catwalk with CIA-like intensity. The sophisticated A-line shifts, sleek trenches, and sequined pencil skirts will surely ramp up office style in spring 2012.

Jill Stuart
Jill Stuart showed an ultra-feminine collection of pretty frocks. Corals paired with nude and blush lets us know that colorblocking will still be on-trend next spring. Ladies who lunch, take note!

Christian Siriano
Christian Siriano’s show was an ethereal experience involving three main factors: breathtaking gowns, saturated hues, and dream-like fabrics. The audience sat in awestruck wonder as the collection was unveiled. Without a doubt, we know we’ll see Siriano’s creations on the red carpet next awards season.

Betsey Johnson
With hip-hop blasting from the speakers and the crowd laced with stars (including Betsey’s new obsession, rapper Nicki Minaj), the Betsey Johnson stage was more of a party than a show. The models came stomping out in burlesque-inspired pieces in animal and floral prints, and Betsey ended the show with her signature cartwheel and split.

Perry Ellis
It was hard to pull ourselves away from the Betsey Johnson party, but we’re so glad we did because the Perry Ellis show had its own surprises in store. After watching a parade of tailored suiting and linen safari jackets march down the runway, we were totally taken aback by the surprise ending: a procession of shirtless models baring impeccable six-pack abs!

The front row surprises are all a part of MBFW fun—like the moment actress Jamie King got assigned a seat next to a tall blonde in the same Jill Stuart dress! Songbird Corinne Bailey Rae and actor Joe Manganiello are two more of the notable names we spotted in the front row crowd.

We’re off to take in the final shows this Wednesday and Thursday. Remember to follow our runway updates on Twitter (@ideeli) and to check out our Featured Fashion Week Designer sales here. Then stay tuned for more inside scoop straight from the MBFW scene!

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Wrap-Up

We came, we saw, we coveted. Another Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, drew to a close this past Thursday, February 17. And, after 8 days of special sales, guest bloggers, live-Tweeting runway coverage and tons of posts on Facebook, we’re ready for spring break! But not before giving you the scoop on our rounds about Lincoln Center during what was our best and most fun fashion week to date!

Featured Fashion Week Designers
Each season, our Featured Fashion Week Designer suite of bring you looks from some of our all-time favorite designers, the same day their runway shows debut. This time, everyone from Betsey Johnson to ADAM to Tadashi Shoji graced our ideeli sales. On the day of our very last designer, L.A.M.B., we topped off the week with a whopper of a Twitter giveaway of the label’s handbags as a way to give a few lucky ideeli mavens the chance to win their own piece of runway-ready style.

Twitter and Facebook
One thing we know after covering the shows last season is that Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week stops for no one, and certainly not on Twitter, where our followers came along with us as we provided moment-to-moment coverage of the runway looks, scene, and glitterati that dotted Lincoln Center. And on Facebook, the style chat was nonstop, as we discussed everything from “Are bandage dresses still a relevant trend?” (Yes - see the above pic) to the bright pops of color that are in store for fall (Love!) to favorite fashion movie inspirations (The Devil Wears Prada and Pretty Woman were among the faves).

My First Fashion Week
The second installment of our editorial series highlighted the adventures and misadventures of an inaugural trip through all things à la mode by ideeli’s fearless Assistant Editor, Carmen Villafañe. And what a week it was, as Carmen attended her first runway show, got her first street style photo taken, met a few of her most admired fashion icons (including Vogue’s inimitable Grace Coddington, above), as well as encountered a gaggle of iconic supermodels at Adrienne Vittadini's show (see our very first pic at the top of the post). There was also the invaluable advice she got from industry notables on how to handle one’s first fashion week. Some of the best tips? Lynn Yaeger’s sage “Have a thick skin if people are mean to you,” and Fern Mallis’ simple yet essential “Stay hydrated.” For more of Carmen’s escapades, read on here.

The Beauty Beat
The best in backstage beauty secrets, runway makeup trends, and how to get the looks yourself were covered once more in our ongoing Beauty Beat series, hosted again by makeup artist and blogger extraordinaire Felicia Walker Benson. Her verdict for beauty this fall? “All signs seem to point toward neutral territory for A/W '11. While the shades may not be obvious ones, the end result is still perfectly polished. The trend may suggest the abandonment of color (temporarily, of course!), but what it doesn't mean is an abandonment of beauty altogether.” For Felicia’s full take on fall beauty, check out all of her beauty scoop here.

That does it for us until September. What did you think of this season’s shows? And, better yet, what else would you like to see us do for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week? Tell us in the comments!

The Beauty Beat at MBFW: Part 2

ideeli's Beauty Beat series delivers the beauty 411 from in and around Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week: the latest on makeup trends, the visionaries who work backstage at the shows to create them, and how to get the looks yourself. Brought to you in savvy style by expert beauty blogger and pro makeup artist Felicia Walker Benson of ThisThatBeauty.com, read on for the wrap-up report from Lincoln Center!

The Fall/Winter 2011 season of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week came in like a lamb but went out like a lion! In sharp contrast to the mid-week Beauty Beat report where we saw lots of relaxed, neutral looks, our end-of-week round-up reveals a tale of two makeup trends – Nude versus Glam (check out the lovelies at Farah Angsana, above). Personally, I find this contrast quite refreshing and truly appreciate designers who offer diverse runway looks, giving women the option to go subtle or go strong!

MAKEUP AND NAILS
Well hello there, you Glamourpuss, you! By end-of-week we finally saw signs of color and vibrancy. “Yes”, exclaimed my beating heart! Shows like Farah Angsana, bebe (above), and Carolina Herrera delivered full on, unapologetic glamour. Lips were drenched in reds and berries while lash lines were darkly lined and winged. Make no mistake about it: timeless glamour is here to stay! We are seeing a strong presence of iconic looks like luminous skin, glowing cheeks, glossy lashes and precise pouts. To complete the statement of glamour, shades like merlot, plum, and crimson adorn nails. At the Imitation show, below, models wore a classic red nail lacquer, Dashing Diva’s Date Night.
At Toni Francesc (below), we saw a modern twist on classic glamour with dramatically applied black eye shadow across the upper eyelids. Feathered eyelashes were added to create a bird-like effect. While this look is certainly slightly more avant-garde, there’s still an obvious emphasis on glamour.
SKIN AND HAIR
While lips, eyes, and nails are amped up to reflect the mood of timeless glamour, fresh, natural skin and simple, beautiful hair still reign supreme. Modern, sleek styles were observed at Jenny Packham (below), where Leonardo Mannetti for L'Oreal created soft, long, flowing waves.
GET THE LOOK
This season, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week displayed a strong presentation of makeup extremes – “Barely-There Nude” and “High-Wattage Glamour.” While these looks are polar opposites, the good news is that both are very easily replicated to suit your mood and personal taste. It is literally as simple as amping up or toning down your eyes, cheeks, lips, and nails.
  • The common thread, with respect to makeup, is skin. If you have yet to solidify an effective skin care routine, now is the time to focus on achieving your best skin through solid maintenance: cleanse, tone, treat, and protect. For the last few seasons, there has been a clear departure from heavy foundation and a move toward fresh, transparent coverage. A solid daily skin care routine will help you to keep your skin looking its best!
  • Want to channel your inner starlet without going over the top? If winged liner isn’t quite your thing, ditch it and place emphasis on the lash with several coats of ultra black mascara. This technique gives the illusion of “come hitcher” eyes without the required precision of an eyeliner pencil.
  • With hair trending toward easy styling, the theme of “at-home maintenance” is the biggest takeaway from the runways. Rely on highly effective at-home products to keep your hair healthy and well cared for in between salon visits.
Well this has been a blast, ideeli mavens! I have thoroughly enjoyed our time together. Let’s keep the beauty party going…feel free to follow me on Twitter @ThisThatBeauty and at my blog, ThisThatBeauty.com. Bye-bye for now ☺...until next season!

My First Fashion Week: Part 3

Every season, in our role as an official sponsor of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, we ask one novice MBFW-goer to record her adventures and, ahem, misadventures. This February, ideeli’s fearless Assistant Editor, Carmen Villafañe, is our My First Fashion Week correspondent. The 23-year old Miami native, who is usually orchestrating our sales editorials in the office, is experiencing the glam scene at Lincoln Center for the first time—and let’s just say she’s not the retiring type. Here’s the final installment on her exploits! With three shows to go before I wrapped up my first fashion week experience, I was feeling like an old pro. I had this calm confidence about me—because I’m a fashion insider now, and I know what’s up…right?! So wrong. With Tuesday's tickets to Badgley Mischka in hand, I was late. Very, very late. Train trouble, traffic once I switched to a cab, pretty much the universe saying “Forget it babe, you snooze, you literally lose.” As I sprinted into the tents, it seemed like eons ago that I sat down at my first show, unsure of what to do with my hands while I waited for Luca Luca to start. (That’s my stack of invites below.) The lights dimmed as I slid into my seat. I'm definitely not a pro yet; this was beginner's luck at it's finest. The show was everything you’d expect from the famed design duo. A one-shouldered, fuschia-sequined column gown begged for an invitation to a gala, and of course, in true Badgley Mischka form, the piece de resistance: bridal. The slim ivory gown with a ruffle that cascaded down from the waist was almost enough reason to make me heed my grandmother’s nagging reminder that “I’m not getting any younger and should settle down.” Almost.

My last day at MBFW was Wednesday, and I was scheduled to attend avant-garde darling Alexandre Herchovitch and the always classic Adrienne Vittadini. As I jaunted up the breezeway towards the tents, where all the street style photogs hang out to snap pictures of fashion's elite, I ate it. Literally, on hands and knees, face 15 shades of red, hyperventilating from my sprint up Broadway. But it wouldn’t be me if it stopped there. While I was trying to access Twitter on my iPhone, I proceeded to tweet the ideeli login information for the free world to see. Crisis was averted by my much more calm and collected co-workers back at the office, but still. All before even stepping into the tents? Lock it up, Carmen! Check out one of my more successful tweets below, streamed live in the lobby. Luckily the show hadn’t started, so I dusted myself off in my 3rd row seat, and made sure there were no unsightly tears in my stockings as the music cued up. Herchovitch is known for his off-kilter sensibility and dark motifs. I loved that he stuck to a palette of chartreuse and black for a dramatic effect, but tempered it with lady-like lace. And I have a few ex-boyfriends who probably would agree that the straightjacket-strapped coats are perfect for me. That's out one of the designer's hooded numbers below. Just like that, it was time for my last event of the season. I thought Adrienne Vittadini’s Modern Muse collection was going to be a presentation—where you admire the clothes up close like a museum exhibit. It was packed, and I realized, not only was this going to be a full-on show, but I’d be standing two feet away from some of the most iconic women in fashion. That's them below—from left, Pat Cleveland, Niki Taylor, Irina Pantaeva, Fredrique van Der Wal,Carmen Dell’Orefice, Roshumba, and Carol Alt. Like real troopers, the supermodels walked twice, dancing and having fun on the runway in a way only established, confident women can do. The practical separates in luxe fabrics were classic Adrienne Vittadini but the real stars were the women that wore them. They personified what style should be, with the inner glow that comes from doing you and loving it—no matter what you’re wearing. Irina and Roshumba work the runway below. To wrap up what’s been a whirlwind of fashion, fails, and what I hope my future will look like, here are a few gems I picked up on my first fashion week.
    • Let your freak flag fly. The last thing the industry wants is another knock-off. Be yourself! Fashion week is the perfect time to try that orange lipstick you have no idea what to do with. That said; wipe it off before meeting your real life friends for dinner. It doesn’t translate very well.
    • Fashionably late is relative. So you might have a few more minutes to work with, but don’t miss Lela Rose’s show because you’re running late. She sure as hell isn’t waiting for you. Moment of silence for that fail of all fails.
    • Positive IDs on celebrities. They’re beautiful, but in the heat of the moment, I guarantee all those years of watching E! News will fly right out of your head and they might as well be the guy sitting next to you on the subway. In short, Tyson Beckford, is in fact, NOT Tyrese.
    • The only thing you have to be afraid of…is you. My level of anxiety before my first show would have required horse tranquilizers. But by day 6 I was breezing through the tents, waving at Fern Mallis, and chatting up the bartenders—they might as well have set up a cot for me in the lobby. Keep in mind that this week-long world of all things fabulous is populated by real people just like us.
    • Make new friends, but keep the old. The best part about this entire experience was getting to share it—be it with a newfound industry buddy, ideeli staffers or the best friends that are there through it all.
The past week has been a whirlwind. I barely slept—a combination of adrenaline and energy drinks had me up until 4:45 a.m. writing my second blog post. My apartment looks like a bomb hit it, with clothes, shoes, bags, and paper invites strewn everywhere from the various ensemble changes throughout the week. I face-planted in front of Lincoln Center—in flats. I spoke to Grace Coddington. This experience—the rush, the clothes, the people, even the fails—is why I got into this crazy biz to begin with. This may have been my first fashion week, but rest assured y’all, it certainly won’t be my last. See you next season!
